Meetings with various stakeholders completed the fourth day of the Peer Review of the National Statistical System. The international review team talked both with the representatives of the bodies -producers of data, and the users – business and employers’ organisations, syndicates, media, academic community. The diverse profile of the participants in the discussions today contributed to a real picture of the cooperation of the National Statistical Institute with all groups that use statistical data in their work.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of cooperation within the National Statistical System? What will the statistics look like in a decade? What are the NSI’s plans for future development? These were the main topics in the discussions on the third day of the Peer Review of the National Statistical System in Bulgaria. In addition to NSI experts, teams from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Executive Environment Agency and the National Social Security Institute also took part in the talks.

The quality and security of information at the NSI were the focus of the second day of the Peer Review of the National Statistical System in Bulgaria. These are some of the 16 principles set out in the European Statistics Code of Practice, which the NSI follows in the entire process of data collection, processing and dissemination. The implementation of these principles is also the basis for public confidence in official statistics.

In the period from 28 March till 1 April 2022 the third in row Peer review of the National Statistical System (NSS) of Bulgaria will be held within its membership in the European Statistical system (ESS). All ESS members are subject to peer reviews, incl. Eurostat, the national statistical systems of the EU Member States, and of the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The period when the peer reviews of the whole European Statistical system will be held is from 2021 by 2023.  

In execution of the 2021 Population Census and Housing Census in the Republic of Bulgaria Act (PCHCA2021), the Law on Statistics and resolutions of the Central Census Commission, the Program of the European Statistical System (ESS), Eurostat for the joint survey of time use in March 2022, the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria starts the conduction of the ‘Time use survey’.

From the beginning of April 2022, the National Statistical Institute starts a Household Budget Survey in newly selected households.

The survey is annual and it is included in the National Statistical Programme 2022. In the survey take part 3 060 randomly selected households divided into three sub-samples each containing 1 020 households. During the April - June 2022 period households from each sub-sample are consistently included in the Household Budget Survey. Each household participates in the survey four months during the 12-month period of the method of rotation sample.

In March, the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria launches conducting of the survey on ‘Social Inclusion and Living Conditions 2022’.

Refugees from Ukraine are to be accommodated in the hotel part of the training centre of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) in the village of Slivek, in the Lovech Region. In this way, NSI takes part in the campaign for the support of Ukrainian citizens who left their homes because of the war.

‘We wanted to help these people in a purely human way. It is good that we managed to quickly unite our efforts with the municipality of Lovech,’ said the NSI President, Sergey Tsvetarski.

The European Statistical Governance Advisory Board (ESGAB) published 18 recommendations for Eurostat

The NSI passed a successful audit and was recertified according to the leading international standards for information security and quality management - ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. On January 19, the President of the Institute Mr. Sergey Tsvetarski received the Certificate for Integrated Management System from Mr. Kalin Panev, head of RINA Bulgaria.
