Refugees from Ukraine are to be accommodated in the hotel part of the training centre of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) in the village of Slivek, in the Lovech Region. In this way, NSI takes part in the campaign for the support of Ukrainian citizens who left their homes because of the war.

‘We wanted to help these people in a purely human way. It is good that we managed to quickly unite our efforts with the municipality of Lovech,’ said the NSI President, Sergey Tsvetarski.

For an undetermined time period, 30 Ukrainian citizens will be accommodated for free in the hotel while the NSI will provide them with full-board accommodation. The decision of the NSI leadership was taken after the letter it received from the Mayor of the Lovech Municipality with a request to provide the training centre. It is in line with the programme endorsed by the government for the assistance of Ukrainian citizens seeking protection in Bulgaria.

The European statistical community expressed its support and solidarity with Ukraine as early as last week. In a joint letter supported by all Directors-Generals/Presidents of statistical institutes within ESS, the Director-General of Eurostat, Mariana Kotzeva, and the Director-General of the French Statistical Institute (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies/INSEE), Jean-Luc Tavernier (now France holds the rotational Presidency of the Council of the EU), shared the common hope that the war actions would end soon and peace would be restored.
