Happy Anniversary!

Dear colleagues and friends,

On 25^th June 1880 by virtue of the Decree № 296, issued by Prince Alexander I, the Statistical Department at the Ministry of Finance was established and in the next year the department grew into an independent Statistical Bureau. Hereby, the foundations of the state statistical institution in Bulgaria were laid down.

The National Statistical Institute Is Changing Its Organization of Work

In order to ensure the health and safety of its employees, respondents and users and in relation to the measures taken to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the National Statistical Institute is changing its organization of work.

Surveys and respondents

The National Statistical Institute suspended surveys, which are conducted via direct personal contact with the population and face-to-face interviews.

The NSI is extending the deadlines for submissions of annual activity reports for 2019

Considering the adopted by the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria Law on measures and actions during state of emergency Act, the deadline for submission of annual activity reports for legal units and natural persons (sole proprietors) and for enterprises without activity for 2019 is extended until 30^th June 2020.

The deadline for submission of consolidated annual activity report for enterprises is extended until 30^th September 2020.

The NSI is suspending surveys conducted via interviewers

The National Statistical Institute is suspending surveys conducted via direct personal contact with the population until the end of March. The visitations and observations on commercial retail establishments, related to surveys on consumer prices is also suspended for the same period. The reason is the epidemiological situation in Bulgaria and the health safety measures taken to contain the spread of the Coronavirus taken by the government and the National Assembly.

The Pilot Census is being moved up to April

During its meeting today, the Central Census Commission has declared that the Pilot Census will start on 20^th of April. The Census is being pushed back a month due to the epidemiological situation in the country and the health safety measures recommended by the national coronavirus task force.

The National Statistical Institute will conduct a Household Budget Survey in new households

From the beginning of April 2020 the National Statistical Institute starts a Household Budget Survey in newly selected households.

Household Budget Survey is the oldest sample survey in Bulgaria. Its beginning was set 95 years ago - in March 1925, when the first survey of family income and expenditure was conducted.

Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni: Trust in statistics depends on its professional independence

EU Commissioner for Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, was a special guest to the 42^nd meeting of the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC), which was held on 12-13 February in Luxembourg and was the first one for 2020. Traditionally it is chaired by Eurostat and comprises the heads of the national statistical offices of the EU Member states, as well as representatives of the EEA/EFTA, Switzerland, ECB, OECD and IMF. Bulgaria was represented by the President of the National Statistical Institute Sergey Tsvetarski.

Study visit of experts of Kosovo Agency of Statistics in the field of Adult Education Survey

From 16 to 18 December 2019 BNSI hosted a study visit of experts of the Department of Social Statistics of Kosovo Agency Statistics in the field of Adult Education Survey. The study visit was held within the IPA 2015 Multi-beneficiary statistical cooperation programme, which is funded by the European commission and implemented by the German GOPA Consultants.

The National Statistical Institute and the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics Signed an Agreement on Bilateral Cooperation

The Bulgarian statisticians will cooperate with their Palestinian counterparts in the fields of macroeconomic, demographic, business statistics and work with consumers to provide statistics, exchange ideas and information by joint activities. This is foreseen in the Agreement on Bilateral Cooperation in the Field of Statistics, which was signed by the NSI President Mr. Sergey Tsvetarski and Dr. Ola Awad, President of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.

Meeting of the National Statistical Council

At the meeting of the National Statistical Council under the chairmanship of Prof. Stoyan Tsvetkov held on December 6, 2019, the Report on the implementation of the National Statistical Programme and the Activity of the NSI in 2019 was discussed and adopted. Over the past year the NSI conducted 271 statistical surveys and activities, respectively the bodies of statistics – 45. A review of the implementation of all statistical surveys and strategic priorities in 2019 was made in the Report.
