Statistical survey on tourist trips and tourism-related expenditure of the population provides data on the number of tourists, the number of trips in the country and abroad, as well as expenditure on trips.

The object of the survey is the residents of 15 years age and over in Bulgaria. The statistical survey is a sample survey and the sample includes households in the country. All persons of 15 years age and over, members of the selected households are interviewed.

Tourism trips - every private or professional trip outside the place where they live for a period no more than one year and whose main purpose is not doing any activity for payment.

The tourist trips can be the following:

Private - holiday, visit culture and sport events, medical treatment, education, religion activities, visit relatives and friends, and others.

Professional - business trip, participation in conference, congress and seminars, conclude bargains and others.

Visitor is a traveller taking a trip to a main destination outside his/her usual environment for no longer than one year whose main purpose is not doing any activities for a payment. People traveling daily or weekly for work, study, shopping, visiting the physician and others excluded from the definition of a visitor.

Usual environment of a person includes places located near his home as well as places frequented by him. It has two aspects - vicinity and frequency of the visits. Places located close to the place of residence of a person are part of the usual environment, even so though they maybe rarely visited. For example, if the place where the villa or vacation house is located near to home, but rarely visited, it is part of the usual environment of a person.

Quality assurance in survey on tourist trips and tourism-related expenditure of the population is carried out in accordance with:

· Regulation 1051/2011 implementing Regulation 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning European statistics on tourism, as regards the structure of the quality reports and the transmission of the data.

· Policy and program quality management of the BNSI.

Since 2013, BNSI has prepared an annually quality report of the survey on tourist trips and tourism-related expenditure of the population containing information about various aspects of quality.

Main users of the data on tourist trips and expenditure for them involved are ministries and other users in the country, as well as Eurostat and other international organizations.

The survey on tourist trips and tourism-related expenditure of the population includes all mandatory variables according Regulation 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning European statistics on tourism.

The sample used for the survey is two-stage cluster sample The sample size is 3 000 households or about 5 250 persons aged 15 years and over. Due to the sampling approach used in the survey, results are subject of errors which attributable to sample(stochastic errors) as well as other errors relating to the inability to be interviewed some of the units in the sample, error in registration of responses, processing, and others.

The survey is a sample and calculates the coefficient of variation, standard error or confidence interval for each quarter.

To reduce the numbers of non-respondents in the survey, BNSI send letters to households that are selected in the sample.

Data on expenditure of tourist trips and expenditure from them are published 55 days after the reporting quarter.

Primary data of the questionnaires are entered into software, which made logical and arithmetic checks, and at the same time discrepancies are corrected. Additional logical compatibility of data in the aggregated files is carried out.

The completed questionnaires are coded and data entry is done on computer at the Regional statistical office. The BNSI are received primary data, where it performed processing, correcting, analyzing and weighing at the national level.
