First edition of statistical compendium of Principality of Bulgaria already in digital format

On the eve of the national day of the Republic of Bulgaria - March 3, and 120 years since the first statistical compendium of the Principality of Bulgaria has been published Digital library of the National Statistical Institute provides free online access to digital copies of the publication.

The Compendium was published by the Statistical Topographic Department at the Headquarters of the Army in 1897. Captain Atanasov was the compiler.

International conference on Big Data was held in Sofia

The National Statistical Institute hosted and co-organised, together with Statistics Belgium, an international conference at which the results of the ESSnet Big Data project were presented. NSI President Sergey Tsvetarsky, Acting Director-General of Eurostat Mariana Kotzeva, Director-General of Statistics Netherlands Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, and project coordinator Peter Struijs participated in the event, which took place on 23 - 24 February 2017 in Sofia.

The NSI will conduct a survey on ‘Social Inclusion and Living Conditions 2017’ during the March - May 2017 period

In March, the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria launches conducting of the survey on ‘Social Inclusion and Living Conditions 2017’.

Regulation No. 1177/2003 of the European Parliament and the Council establishes a common framework for systematic production of statistics in the European Union on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) which includes comparable and timely information on current status and dynamics of income, as well as the level and structure of poverty and social exclusion at national and European level.

International conference on Big Data to be held in Sofia

Meeting of the European Statistical System Committee

The President of the National Statistical Institute Sergey Tsvetarsky will participate in the 32nd meeting of the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC), to be held on 9 February 2017 at Eurostat, Luxembourg. This will be the first Committee meeting for this year out of the four regular annual ESSC meetings.

The Committee will discuss and vote on the following two legislative proposals of the European Commission:

NSI President to participate in UNICEF seminar

Between 1 - 8 February 2017 the President of the National Statistical Institute Sergey Tsvetarsky will take part in a workshop organised by UNICEF’s Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States on the topic “Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey” (MICS). The survey is a major source of information for the indicators of the 2030 Millennium Development Goals adopted by the UN. The event will be held in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Mariana Kotzeva became the Acting Director-General of Eurostat

On 1 January this year, Mariana Kotzeva became the Acting Director-General of Eurostat. Mrs Kotzeva's appointment follows the retirement of Walter Radermacher, in charge of Eurostat from 1 August 2008 until the end of 2016.

Mariana Kotzeva joined Eurostat as a special adviser (Adviser   hors classe) in April 2012.

In July 2014, she became Deputy Director-General, a post she still holds today.

Population census 1934 in digital format

The digital library of the NSI provides users of statistical information the possibility of free online access to 1 605 pages of the digital collection ‘Census of Population and Housing Fund in the Kingdom of Bulgaria on 31 December 1934’, which is published for the first time on the Internet.

On December 31, 1934 began the ninth general population census in the Kingdom of Bulgaria. It was carried out under the Law on General Censuses and Decree No. 2 from April 18, 1934.
