Established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UN Statistical Commission supports the Council in promoting the development of national statistics and improves their comparability; in coordinating the statistical activities of specialised agencies; in developing the Secretariat’s statistical services; in consulting the UN bodies on issues related to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of statistical information; in fostering the improvement of statistics and statistical methods in general.
The UN Statistical Commission presents a report on each of its sessions to ECOSOC, as well as resolutions and recommendations. A draft resolution on the work of the Commission pertaining to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was approved at the 48th session.
The UN Statistical Commission traditionally organises special events on the sidelines of the regular session. A seminar on open data was held on 3 March 2017, and a High-Level Forum on Official Statistics with a focus on the relationship between national and international statistics took place on 6 March.
This year’s session was held under the motto “Better data. Better lives” in the framework of celebrations of World Statics Day (20 October), which was first observed in 2010.
The 48th session’s agenda included various discussion topics: data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; regional statistical development in Europe; quality assurance in the global statistical system; fundamental principles of official statistics; integration of statistical and geospatial information, and others. Topics in the field of demographic statistics, household surveys, health statistics, price statistics, and others were presented for informational purposes.
The President of the NSI Mr. Tsvetarsky held several meetings, participated in discussions, and exchanged views with statisticians from around the world.
