Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe visited NSI and had a meeting with the President of the institute, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, and heads of departments from the Demographic and Social Statistics Directorate and Business Statistics Directorate.
The WHO team is in Bulgaria in relation to the implementation of the Health Labour Market Analysis (HLMA), which is one of the activities included in the biennial collaborative agreement (BCA) signed between WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2024-2025.
The HLMA is a WHO methodology designed to generate the information required on key factors influencing health workforce to enable informed policy decision-making, strategic investments, and effective health workforce planning at national and sub national levels.
The guests were informed about the statistical surveys conducted by NSI in the health and labour market domains and highly appreciated the data provided by the NSI. The President of NSI highlighted the long-standing good cooperation with WHO in the field of Public Health Statistics. Annually, in compliance with European legislation, NSI coordinates the provision of data and is a source of information on non-financial indicators within the framework of OECD, Eurostat and WHO Europe Joint Questionnaire on Non-Monetary Healthcare Statistics. NSI is the responsible institution for the compilation of data in accordance with the System of Health Accounts (SHA 2011) and for the provision of data on deaths by causes (COD statistics). In addition, each year NSI is the focal point for consultation and validation of data and estimates on maternal mortality, infant mortality, deaths from various causes, including COVID-19 and others.
The two-year agreement with WHO aims to support Bulgaria in promoting access to quality healthcare for everyone without fear of financial hardship, offering effective protection against health emergencies and fostering communities where public health actions and appropriate public policies ensure better lives in a welfare economy.
