Established by the UN Economic and Social Council, the UN Statistical Commission supports the Council in promoting the development of national statistics and improving their comparability; coordinating the statistical activities of the specialized agencies; developing the Secretariat’s statistical services; consulting the UN bodies on issues related to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of statistical information; fostering the improvement of statistics and statistical methods in general.
The UN Statistical Commission presents a report on each of its sessions, as well as resolutions and recommendations, to the UN Economic and Social Council.
Traditionally, before the start of the UN Statistical Commission, a special seminar will be held on Friday, 2nd March 2018, at which the participants will have the opportunity to share experiences in the area of data interoperability and data exchange platforms at the national, regional and global level.
On Monday, 5th March 2018, a High-Level Forum on Official Statistics will take place, at which the delegates will discuss ways to improve communication between statisticians and key stakeholders.
This year’s session will also be held under the motto ‘Better data. Better lives’ in the framework of the celebrations of World Statics Day (20 October), which was first observed in 2010.
The session’s agenda includes various topics for discussion and decision-making: data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; Handbook of Statistical Organization; open data; household surveys; Big Data for official statistics; regional statistical development; working methods of the Statistical Commission, and others. Topics in the field of demographic statistics, gender statistics, service statistics, the International Comparison Programme and price statistics, and others will be presented for informational purposes.
The President of the NSI Mr. Tsvetarsky will hold several meetings, will participate in discussions and will exchange views with statisticians from all over the world.
