At an invitation of the Executive Director of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), Mr. Gogita Todradze, the President of the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD, and Deputy President Svilen Kolev, PhD, took part in the second edition of Regional Conference on Gender Statistics, which was held on 25-26 July 2024 in Tbilisi.
The conference was organised by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in collaboration with GEOSTAT, under the theme “Accelerating progress towards inclusive development through gender statistics”. The forum was part of the events marking the 105th anniversary of the establishment of the statistical office of Georgia as well as the 25th anniversary of collecting Gender Statistics in Georgia.
In his congratulatory speech during the ceremony, the President of NSI highlighted the excellent cooperation and fruitful joint work between the national statistical offices of Bulgaria and Georgia, evidence for which is the signed Cooperation Agreement from 2006. “In order to provide high quality statistics nowadays we need not only artificial intelligence, reliable software and machines but also something very important – a good collaboration between the statistical institutes of countries. Sharing ideas, good practices and training statisticians from different countries are only a few of the activities we do together.” – said Prof. Atanasov in his speech. For the anniversary of GEOSTAT, the President of NSI presented his colleague, Gogita Todradze, with an honorary sign of Bulgarian statistics.
The objective of the two-day conference was to share knowledge, best practices and experiences on improving data and evidence for informed policy making on gender equality and women’s empowerment. During the first session of the conference, “Gender Data Governance for Efficient Decision Making”, the presentation of Svilen Kolev, PhD, on “Building monitoring system for tracking progress of European and national strategies and regional policy” and the presentation of the Information System “Monitorstat”, which NSI is developing stirred great interest and discussions.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Georgia, ministers, the governor of the National Bank and heads of national statistical offices of countries from the Western Balkans, Turkey, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, politicians, representatives of the academia and of regional and international organizations.
