On November 3, 2022, an awarding ceremony for the winners of the 2022 statistical essay competition for students took place in the "Press Center" Hall of the National Statistical Institute (NSI). The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD - President of The NSI, Assoc. Prof. Mihail Konchev, PhD - Deputy President of NSI, Antoaneta Ilkova - Director of 'Multi-Domain Statistics and User Services' Directorate, Head Office employees and the 1st and 2d place winners in the competition, as well as a collective group of students from 5th, 6th and 7th grade from 109 Primary School "Hristo Smirnenski" in Sofia, who receive an incentive award for the presented essay.
In his welcoming speech, the President of the NSI outlined the important role played by knowledge and skills in statistics in the educational process. Functional statistical literacy helps adolescents by cultivating in them a culture of using statistical information in learning the material of natural sciences, economic specialties and information technologies. At the presentation of the awards, emphasis was placed on the need for close communication between students, teachers, parents and NSI, in order to build trust in the data of official statistics, which works according to established methodology, verifies research results and does not compromise with the truth.
For their part, the awardees thanked for the high evaluation of their work, shared their excitement at crossing the threshold of the statistical institution in Bulgaria and talked about their future plans and dreams. The recognition of their efforts, stimulates them to continue to deepen their knowledge and skills in statistics and to apply what they have learned in their future careers.
