On 15 April 2013 the President of the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria, Reneta Indjova, Ph.D., will meet with the members of the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board (ESGAB) in the building of the European Commission in Brussels. The visit is at the invitation of the Chairperson of ESGAB, Mr. Thomas Wieser.
The European Statistical Governance Advisory Board (ESGAB) was established by the European Parliament and the Council in 2008 to provide an independent overview of the implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice in the European Statistical System. ESGAB’s work aims at enhancing professional independence, integrity and accountability of the European Statistical System, key elements of the Code of Practice, as well as the quality of European statistics.
ESGAB consists of seven members. Its tasks include preparation of an annual report to the European Parliament and the Council on the implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice. For the preparation of the fourth annual report (Annual Report 2012) ESGAB held a dialogue with representatives of three countries, from which it received valuable insights. The elaboration of the fifth annual report is underway and in this regard the President of NSI, Reneta Indjova, Ph.D., has been invited to share her managerial experience and vision on improving the statistical system and enhancing the coordination nature of European statistics.
The focus of the discussions will be on issues related to governance at the national level - institutional setup of the NSI, its coordination role in the national system, the production of statistical data with emphasis on the decision making process, measures of resource constraints (financial, staff and IT), ensuring the quality of statistical information, interaction with users and providers of data, compliance with the European Statistics Code of Practice and measures to facilitate its implementation at national level, as well as measures to improve the efficiency of the European Statistical System.
The next day, 16 April 2013, Mrs. Indjova, Ph.D., will visit the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria to the European Union and will meet with senior diplomats working in the field of statistics in the decision making process in the European Union.
