The President of the National Statistical Institute, Mrs. Reneta Indjova, PhD, will take part in the most authoritative forum of the International Statistical System – the forty-fourth regular session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) which will take place at the UN Headquarters, New York, from 22 January to 1 March 2013. As of January 1st, 2013 Bulgaria is an elected member of UNSC.
Since 1947 the UN Statistical Commission has a guiding role in setting standards and outlining directions of the global statistical system. UNSC and Eurostat, as the EU statistical authority, together with the National Statistical Institutes, establish standards and methodological principles for the global statistical community. UNSC sessions are held once a year and their work programme covers different statistical domains, and provides room for consideration of methodological issues and discussions.
Traditionally UNSC organizes a number of side events to the regular session. This year a special seminar will be conducted on 22 February 2013, entitled "Big Data for Policy, Development and Official Statistics”.
The 44th Session of UNSC will discuss, among others, a programme review on developing of statistical-spatial framework in national statistical systems, a global review of the implementation of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the proposed revision of the Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics.
For new UNSC members, among which is Bulgaria, a meeting on 25 February 2013 is envisaged. The same day a high-level forum on "Response to the Rio+20 Mandate for Broader Measures of Progress" will be held.
The NSI President, Mrs. Indjova, will carry out a number of meetings and will participate in discussions and exchange of views with statisticians from around the world.
