The President of the NSI, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD and Maria Gochova – the Head of the International Relations and Projects Department, participated in the 59th Meeting of the European Statistical System Committee. The event took place in the period of 21 – 22 May 2025 in Luxembourg.
The meeting agenda included discussions related to the revamping of the European Business and Trade Statistics, recommendations made following the review of the information and communications technology (ICT) statistics, the progress made by Member States on the recommendations made after the ESS Peer Reviews, the planned revision of the European System of Accounts (ESA), the implementation of the revised Regulation 223/2009 on European Statistics, etc.
The planned activities at national and European level to mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the European Statistics Code of Practice (ES CoP) were also discussed. The revised ESS Multiannual Action Plan for the period 2021 – 2027 (MAP) was also presented, as well as the draft work programme for 2026 of the European Statistical System, within the framework of the EU’s Single Market Programme.
In addition, the participant were introduced to a report from the current Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as to the plans and programme of the upcoming Danish Presidency.
The ESSC provides professional guidance to the European Statistical System for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics in accordance with statistical principles. The Committee assists Eurostat in matters related to the coordination and priorities of the European Statistical Programme, the further development of the European Statistics Code of Practice, lowering the burden on respondents, statistical confidentiality. It gives opinions and guidance regarding methodology on issues arising from the creation and implementation of statistical programs.
