At an enlarged meeting held on 9 October 2012, the National Statistical Council (NSC) adopted a Strategy for Development of the National Statistical System for the period 2013 - 2017. It outlines the mission, vision, objectives and priorities for the next five years. The Strategy will be implemented through an Action plan, with detailed tasks, responsibilities, deadlines and expected results.
The NSI President, Reneta Indjova Ph.D., opened the forum by welcoming the participants and pointed out that the Bulgarian statistics realizes its responsibility and mission to the society in a time of globalisation, economic crisis and seeking new ways for the development of the European Union. She expressed confidence that the good coordination between all Bodies of Statistics, as well as the incorporation of the achievements of public, academic and government circles, will contribute to provide quality, actual and politically impartial statistical data.
Dr. Mariana Kotzeva, Adviser Hors Classe to Eurostat, and former President of NSI, participated in the extended NSC meeting. She presented the priorities of the European Statistical System for the next five-year programming period, focusing on the challenges of increasing demand for statistical information, competition from the informal statistics due to the appearance of new actors on the information market, and coordination among the National Statistical Systems. Important trends are strengthening of independence and achieving a new status for Eurostat, as well as integration of the national statistics by sharing IT services.
Achievements of Bulgarian statistics and future challenges in the period 2013-2017 were presented by Diana Yancheva, Deputy President of NSI. The main objectives of the new 5-year period are associated with providing complex, multidimensional and comprehensive statistics, which should be the basis for the effective regional and national policymaking.
A new Chairman, Professor Hristina Vucheva, was elected at the meeting of NSC. After her election, she stated that she will work for the improvement and strengthening of the National Statistical System and elevating the status of the NSI as an independent institution of higher rank and extended powers, supported by all Bodies of Statistics.
After extensive discussion and debate, the Strategy for the Development of the National Statistical System for the period 2013-2017 was adopted and it is pending for filing and approval by the Council of Ministers.
At its next meeting the National Statistical Council will discuss and adopt the National Statistical Programme for 2013.
