The President of NSI Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov took part in a high level meeting of the heads of the European national statistical institutes on theme “Towards an ESS Vision 2030”. The event which took place in Balatonfüred was organized jointly by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and Eurostat as part of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The presidents of the national statistical institutes of the member-states and the Director General of Eurostat discussed the need for a clear vision for the development of the European Statistical System (ESS) which operates in a constantly shifting landscape, driven by advancements in digital technologies, the emergence of new data sources, and the diversification of data stakeholders. Among the discussed topics were how to integrate new data sources and adopt new technologies such as AI in the statistical production, how to respond to the growing needs of accelerating innovation and expand experimental statistics, and how to forge strategic partnerships with key players in the merging national and European data ecosystems.
The participants in the meeting agreed that the acceleration of technological development and statistical data needs emerging from the evolving EU priorities should be considered when defining the next objectives of the European Statistical System. Fostering greater cooperation and coordination among the ESS partners will also be essential to ensure the comparability, timeliness and reliability of European official statistics.
