On 25th June 1880 by virtue of the Decree № 296, issued by Prince Alexander I, the Statistical Department at the Ministry of Finance was established and in the next year the department grew into an independent Statistical Bureau. Hereby, the foundations of the state statistical institution in Bulgaria were laid down.
During the next 140 years, the institution would go through a great number of organizational and structural changes. It would develop and improve the methodology of the surveys and collect, process and disseminate data for the state and business within and outside the country. Later it would become part of the international and European statistical family. Moreover, it would further develop the potential of its employees while also satisfying the needs of the society and academic community for timely, reliable and objective statistical information.
Nowadays statistics serve to reflect the processes and phenomena that take place in Bulgaria and the European Union. Its significance increases constantly in the economy of knowledge. Therefore, it is important for statisticians to be confident that their profession and the results of their activities matter to the society and that they enjoy the trust and acknowledgement of people. Working for making informed decisions and choices at state, business, academic and personal level is a matter of responsibility and empathy. Hereof, statisticians walk confidently along this way. The youth and maturity are synergistically connected, they complement each other and bring more strength in every step ahead.
Dear statisticians and users of statistical information, today, 25th June, is the Day of Bulgarian statistics! On its 140th anniversary we congratulate ourselves, we thank each other for being together both in good and hard times and we wish ourselves health, professional longevity and many new encounters with the vast world of numbers.
