The National Statistical Institute has started a work on the project "Food waste statistics” in accordance with the Grant Agreement with the European Commission No. 08232.2013.003-2013.286

The project objectives are aimed to obtaining a more detailed picture of the food waste, as well as to the combination of the sources of statistical and administrative information useful for statistics on food wastes. Also, the project aims to identify and fill gaps in approaches for the calculation and estimation of the data based on the maximum benefit from the available information on the food waste statistics.
These objectives will be achieved through: standardization of indicators and definitions, application of standard international classifications and national registries, development and implementation of appropriate approaches in the process of organizing, collecting and processing data on food waste - justified methodology, appropriate statistical procedures applied on the stages from data collection to data validation.
The results that are expected to be obtained in the process of work under the project will be used to identify the composition and origin of food waste. At this time in Bulgaria the majority of this waste is collected through systems for organized collection of municipal waste.
The duration of the project is 15 months.
