In January 2025, the National statistical institute has started work on the project ‘Improvement of the methodology and data on packages placed on the market to ensure coverage of plastic packaging waste generation’. The implementation of the project is according to Grant agreement with the European Commission No 101198042-2024-BG-EGD.
The project is organized in two work packages.
Work Package 1 ‘Improvement of the statistical methodology for packages placed on the market (PPOM) and data calculation for 2023 and 2024’ aims to provide the methodological basis for the improved production of PPMO statistics for the indicated years. The activities include research and analysis of additional primary data sources, development of a methodology and a model for calculating data on private imports and exports and online trade, development of a web-based electronic questionnaire, collection and validation of primary data, processing, analysis and calculation of statistical data.
Work package 2 ‘Revision of PPOM time series (2021 - 2022)’ within which, based on the improved methodology, the data for the previous years in the time series (2021 and 2022) will be revised. The activities include analysis of the results of Work Package 1, decisions on the revision method and revision of the time series.
The expected results of the project implementation are the availability of improved methodology and tools for the production of statistical data on PPOM, which are also used for the purposes of the own resource based on non-recycled plastic packaging waste, and improved data quality in the time series.
The duration of the project is 18 months and it will end in June 2026.
