The President of NSI Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD and Maria Gochova – Head of the International Relations and Projects Department, took part in the 58th meeting of the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC), which was held in Luxemburg.
The participants discussed topics related to the future and strategic priorities of European statistics. Among the subjects covered were the implementation of a European Strategy for Data, reaching common positions on the upcoming 56th sessions of the United Nations Statistical Commission, the implementation of the revised Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics, and the preparation for the next DGINS Conference in October, 2025 in Croatia. The participants were briefed on a report of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which started on 1 January 2025, and future ESS initiatives to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the European Statistics Code of Practice.
The event was preceded by a high-level workshop of the Presidents and Directors-General of the National Statistical Institutes of the European Statistical System on “Next Decade Priorities of European Statistics”. The focus of the workshop was on the ways for prioritizing and implementing the thematic priorities that would underpin the work of the ESS for the next decade, based on user needs and an efficient use of resources, new tools and data sources.
The ESSC provides professional guidance to the European Statistical System for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics in accordance with statistical principles. The Committee plays an important role in improving the quality of statistics in the EU and in providing relevant information for informed decision-making on European and national level.
