The National Statistical Institute (NSI) has started work on the ‘European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) 2025 wave’ project since December 2024. The implementation of the project is in accordance with the Grant Agreement with the European Commission Nо. 101191410 - 2024-BG-EHIS.
The European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) is the main data source about the health status, life style (health determinants) and the usage of health care services among the EU Member States and in the Republic of Bulgaria. Until now, our country has participated in all the 3 waves of the survey, using a harmonized instrument and a uniform methodology.
The main objective of the project is to collect data for the Republic of Bulgaria in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1700 and the relevant implementing and delegated acts, thus ensuring reliable and comparable data at EU level.
Within the framework of the project, NSI will implement the new and revised concepts, definitions and methodology (including for the standardised key social variables); the data collection method will be changed; the sampling and weighting methods will be improved; the interviewers will undergo special training; quality reporting will be implemented in accordance with the requirements.
The survey will cover persons aged 15 and over, living in private households. In the process of methodological preparation, adaptation of the questionnaire and IT application, pilot testing will be conducted among 720 persons in June 2025. Fieldwork (interviewing) will be conducted in the period October 2025 - January 2026 among a nationally representative sample of approximately 11 150 persons.
In addition to conducting surveys with interviewers using tablets, NSI will also offer to the respondents the opportunity to conduct self-surveys.
The duration of the project is 27 months and will end in February 2027.
