NSI management took part in the 21st meeting of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy

The President of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD and Deputy President Svilen Kolev, PhD, accompanied by experts from the International Relations and Projects Department, took part in the 21st meeting of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The meeting was held on 17-18 June 2024 at the OECD headquarters in Paris.

During the accession review session of Bulgaria, Prof. Atanasov presented the National Statistical System and current developments in the statistical activities of the NSI after the successful on-site peer review missions over the past two years.

Representatives of national statistical offices of the 38 member states, as well as of the candidate countries, discussed topics related to the mandate of the Committee – to provide high-quality and internationally comparable statistical information and to promote the use of reliable statistical data in the process of developing economic and social policies. The importance of official statistics in the decision-making process was also underlined by the Deputy Secretary-General, Fabrizia Lapecorella, who welcomed the participants at the meeting.

Among the topics discussed were the declining survey response rates, seasonal adjustments and how to better present seasonally adjusted data series to the society, the opportunities and challenges that AI presents in the production of official statistics, measuring the socio-economic impact of future climate changes, collecting information on social connectedness, measuring natural capital and others.
