The President of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD took part in the 19th Conference of the International Association of Official Statistics and the International Statistical Institute (IAOS-ISI), which was held on 15-17 May 2024 in Mexico City under the theme “Improving Decision-Making for All”. This year the event was hosted by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
On the first day of the conference, Prof. Atanasov chaired a panel session with a topic, also relevant to Bulgaria, “Movement from Register-Based Census to the Creation of a Statistical Population Register”. During the session representatives from the National Statistical Offices of Lithuania, Croatia, New Zealand, Greece and Uruguay shared their countries’ experience with regards to the latest population and housing census and discussed new ideas but also challenges that administrative sources pose in the process of data collection.
During the three-day annual conference and within the framework of 49 panel sessions, representatives of the statistical community from around the world discussed the role of official statistics as a valuable public good all users rely on to inform their decisions. Furthermore, among the topics discussed were ideas on how to improve engagement with the various stakeholders to better respond to users’ needs and the challenges official statistics face in a context of rapidly evolving, data-rich ecosystems and an increasing number of sources of information.
Traditionally, the conference concluded with the IAOS Young Statisticians Prize session, awarding the best papers in the field of official statistics written by young statisticians.
