May 15 was declared International Family Day by a Decision of the UN General Assembly on September 20, 1993, and it has been officially celebrated since 1994. The holiday provides an opportunity to promote issues related to families and to raise awareness of the social, economic and demographic processes that affect them. Each year, a different theme is announced to commemorate that day. In 2023, the theme is 'Families and Urbanization'.
