International Youth Day was first celebrated on August 12, 2000. It was proclaimed by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on December 17, 1999, on the proposal of the World Conference of Ministers for Youth, held in Lisbon from August 8 to 12, 1998. In Bulgaria, the holiday has been celebrated since 2007. Through various public and artistic events, the day draws attention to the problems of young people as well as to their participation in global environmental initiatives, the development of their leadership skills, and their involvement in causes of international importance.
