NSI launched a project “Link Business Demography to data on trade by enterprise characteristics” which is carried out in accordance with the Grant agreement with the European Commission № 06123.2016.001-2016.344.

Eurostat, in close collaboration with National Statistical Institutes, has been conducting a number of MDL exercises in the previous years in response to user needs for more detailed and relevant information about the enterprise population. At the same time Eurostat in cooperation with the OECD and UNECE is developing the entrepreneurship indicator program (EIP) that collects important indicators on enterprises and their economic performance, in particular of small and medium sized enterprises. More precisely in the context of the Eurostat/OECD entrepreneurship indicator programme, information on the international trade in goods of newly created enterprises are of high relevance. By linking business demography (BD) data to data on international trade in goods statistics by enterprise characteristics (TEC) such information can be produced without any new data collection, i.e. without any additional burden on enterprises.

The general objectives of the project are:

- Linking business demography (BD) statistics to international trade in goods statistics by enterprise characteristics (TEC) to obtain information on export and imports of young enterprises. The goal is to calculate entrepreneurship indicator program (EIP) indicators for young enterprises showing their shares in total number of traders and in trade values of exports and imports of goods by different NACE breakdowns of the business economy;

- Exploit other possibilities of the above linked BD-TEC dataset to analyze the enterprise population and shares of young enterprises including gazelles by combinations of available breakdowns such as NACE, products, partner countries and type of trader;

- Link the above dataset to business register (BR) and structural business statistics (SBS) to add additional characteristics, variables and breakdowns to the dataset in order to calculate indicators on the economic performance of young exporting and importing enterprises compared to other trading and non- trading enterprises in SBS. Here purpose is also to test whether these breakdowns are possible and at what NACE detail as part of the SBS data production.

As mentioned above of particular importance for the evaluation of SME and trade policy is the behavior and economic success of young enterprises and their involvement in international trade. Therefore, this project will be focused specifically to information on export and imports of young enterprises.

The duration of the project is 12 months and it will be finished in December 2017.
