Statistical institutional system of UN

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six main bodies of the United Nations and is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues. It functions through its subsidiary bodies: functional commissions (Statistical Commission), regional commissions (UNECE), and other specialized bodies.

United Nations Statistical Commission

The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947 by the Economic and Social Council, is the highest decision making body for international statistical activities, responsible for setting of statistical standards and the development of concepts and methods, including their implementation at the national and international level.

The Statistical Commission is a Functional Commission and assists the Council:

    a. In promoting the development of national statistics and the improvement of their comparability;
    b. In the coordination of the statistical work of specialized agencies;
    c. In the development of the central statistical services of the Secretariat;
    d. In advising the organs of the United Nations on general questions relating to the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistical information;
    e. In promoting the improvement of statistics and statistical methods generally.

The Statistical Commission oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).

Conference of the European Statisticians at UNECE

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is one of the five regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It was established on 28 March 1947 at the request of the United Nations General Assembly and includes 56 member states most of which are based in Europe, as well as a few in North America and Asia. UNECE’s major aim is to promote pan-European economic integration and cooperation among its member countries and to promote sustainable development and economic prosperity.

The Conference of European Statisticians (CES) is one of the oldest statistical bodies globally, founded in 1953 with its roots in the League of Nations and the first Conference on Statistics in 1928. CES provides a platform for the coordination of international statistical work in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region, for addressing emerging issues and for developing methodological guidelines and recommendations to improve national statistics and their international comparability.
