NSI announces the start of the Sixth European Competition in Statistics for Students (EOS) on the occasion of European Statistics Day. Eurostat and 19 of the EU member states organize it. This year Slovakia joins the traditionally participating countries.
The initiative is aimed at increasing the statistical culture of students by strengthening their curiosity and interest in statistics, showing its role both in various spheres of public life and in people's everyday lives. At the same time, the aim is to motivate teachers to use innovative methods of teaching mathematics, humanities and natural sciences and to encourage student teamwork and cooperation as a means of finding common solutions.
As up to now, the competition is held online in two rounds: national and European. Students from secondary schools in Bulgaria, divided into two categories, have the right to participate in the national round: category A (students from grades X - XII) and category B (students from grades VIII - IX). It is a team competition, with each team consisting of one to three students from one category with a mentor teacher. The first five teams in the national round can participate in the Public Selection of representatives of Bulgaria in the European round of the Competition.
On its official website, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) has created a web space https://www.nsi.bg/esc-2023/, where the complete information about the competition is published - regulations, calendar, prizes, archive and supporting materials. In five past years, over 5 000 Bulgarian students from all over the country took part in the Competition. Each subsequent year, the achievements become greater. In 2022, a team from Sofia took first place in category A, and the rest of our representatives got into the top 20 from all participants. Knowledge and skills are increasing, and the final ranking is a reason for joy and pride for the Bulgarian education system.
