The topic of this year’s DGINS Conference, which was held on the 9th and 10th of October, was ‘Globalisation as an issue that presents particular challenges to upholding the relevance of statistics’. ‘Conclusions on the statistical implications of economic globalisation’ have been discussed and a written consultation among ESSC members is currently underway.
Conference participants have agreed upon the necessity of further actions to ensure high quality and relevant statistics for users. Globalisation is a phenomenon that generates new information requirements from policy makers and users, at both national and European levels. These contemporary needs put statisticians under strong pressure to develop appropriate tools for high quality measurement of the impact of globalisation on statistical indicators. Among the conclusions is the need to clarify and further enhance methodological frameworks and their practical implementation, especially where differences cause significant inconsistencies across statistics provided by national statistical institutes in the Member States. It has also been emphasized on the role of high quality and up-to-date statistical business registers (national and European) as a necessary infrastructure for the coordination of statistical activities and data exchange on MNEs.
On the 11th of October, back-to-back to the DGINS Conference, a regular meeting of the ESSC took place at which the Committee discussed the concept of an overall methodology for the next round of peer reviews, topics for the 2020 DGINS Conference, priority-setting in the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021 - 2027, implementation of Single Integrated Metadata Structure (SIMS) for national quality reporting. Progress report from the current Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union’s Working Party on Statistics was presented as well as the plans for the upcoming Croatian Presidency.
