Happy Baba Marta!

In the Bulgarian ritual culture, Baba Marta is a symbol of spring and an expression of a wish for health and fertility at the beginning of each new cycle in nature. The tradition is related to ancient pagan history from the Balkan Peninsula. The most specific feature of the 1 March rite is garnishing with twisted white and red woollen yarns.

According to Wikipedia, the tradition is still kept in our days in Romania, Moldova, North Macedonia, part of Greece, Serbia, Albania, as well as in a part of today's Ukraine.

 

Meeting of the NSI President with the Union for Private Economic Enterprise

The President of the National Statistical Institute Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD met with the Chairman of the Management Board of the Union for Private Economic Enterprise Vaska Baklarova.

The meeting was also attended by Svilen Kolev, PhD – NSI Deputy President and Assoc. Prof. Noncho Dimitrov from UPEE.

During the conversation, opportunities for cooperation and future joint projects were discussed. Both sides agreed that concluding a cooperation agreement would be a new step in joint activities.

NSI President Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD, was a lecturer in a training workshop on Economic Diplomacy, which was held at the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The topic of the presentation was "NSI - how to read the numbers". For one hour, Assoc. Prof. Atanasov presented the activities of NSI, the basic principles of statistics, the ways and channels of dissemination of statistical data, the main information systems of NSI, errors made when reading the information and others.

The NSI President took part in a High-level Workshop of Presidents and Directors-General and in the 51st meeting of the European Statistical System Committee

On 9 February 2023, in Luxembourg, the Directors-General of EU National Statistical Institutes gathered for a high-level workshop on the topic: "Data Governance Act - Challenges and Opportunities for National Statistical Institutes".

The meeting discussed issues of access to public data and private holders’ databases to be used for statistical purposes.

The summarized results of the implementation of the Data Governance Act in the field of official statistics in individual countries were presented.

13 February - World Radio Day

On this day in 1946, the United Nations radio first sounded. On the initiative of UNESCO, 65 years later, the United Nations General Assembly adopted in 2012 the date of February 13 as World Radio Day.

The theme of the 12th edition of World Radio Day in 2023 is ‘Radio and Peace’.

‘... since wars begin in the minds of men, the defense of peace must be built in the minds of men’, says the UNESCO Constitution. 

NSI and BIA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation

The National Statistical Institute (NSI) and the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between the two institutions. The document was signed by the President of the NSI, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD, and the President of the BIA, Dobri Mitrev. The event was also attended by the two Vice Presidents of the BIA, Maria Mincheva and Stanislav Popdonchev, as well as the Director of the Multi-Domain Statistics, Methodology and Cooperation Directorate at the NSI, Antoaneta Ilkova.

1 February - Vinegrower’s Day

Trifon Zarezan (Day of the Vinegrower) is a Bulgarian folk holiday in honour of St. Trifon. It is celebrated on February 1 or February 14  (old style) and marks the beginning of the spring cycle of agricultural work related to the cultivation of vineyards. The main ritual is pruning, which rejuvenates the plantation and ensures a healthy and fruitful harvest.

Position of the National Statistical Institute on the allegations of a former employee

With regard to a statement by a person claiming to be a former employee of the National Statistical Institute on the air of Nova TV that he was attacked by a colleague and that the NSI is covering up the case, we should note that his claims are manipulative and largely untrue.

In October 2022, we received a report of a conflict between two NSI employees, as a result of which an investigation was immediately appointed and the institutions with jurisdiction were referred. The NSI management immediately took the following actions in the case:
