The President of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD and the Director of Multi-Domain Statistics, Methodology and Registers Directorate, Antoaneta Ilkova, took part in the 11th European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics (Q2024) in Estoril, Portugal. The event was hosted by Statistics Portugal in close collaboration with Eurostat under the theme “Official Statistics as a Pillar of Democracy”.
On the first day of the conference, Assoc. Prof. Atanasov chaired a session on “Smart Surveys Implementation”. Speakers in the session were representatives of Eurostat, the national statistical offices of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway, and the University of Utrecht. The participants discussed the integration of traditional surveys with new data produced from smart surveys and shared their institutions’ experience on the topic.
During the four-day conference as part of 40 different sessions, representatives of national statistical offices, the academia and users had the chance to discuss various subjects in the field of quality in national and European statistics. Among the topics covered were institutional frameworks for quality in official statistics, innovation and research to foster quality, the use of artificial intelligence and the ethical issues related to it, statistical literacy and many more.
Participants were also able to take part in a variety of engaging and informative training courses, dedicated to quality management, the use of AI in official statistics, effective data visualization for statistical dissemination, and integration of administrative and privately-held data in the production of high quality statistics.
