“Better data. Better lives.” was the motto of the 55th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), which brought together the heads of statistical institution from around the world and took place from 27 February to 1 March 2024 at the UN Headquarters in New York. Bulgaria’s representative at the event was the President of the National Statistical Institute Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov.
As is tradition, before the start of the session, a special seminar dedicated to the latest trends in the field of statistics was held. Participants discussed the problems faced by producers of official statistics, as well as working with the various users of data.
A High-Level Forum was also held, where the implementation of the fundamental principles of official statistics was discussed.
During the meetings, decisions were reviewed and adopted on reports of working groups in various statistical fields, including data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, governance statistics, national accounts, environmental-economic accounting, social and demographic statistics, population and housing census, agriculture statistics, tourism statistics, etc. Special attention was given to the working methods of the Commission and the possible enlargement of its membership.
The UN Statistical Commission is the highest body in the International Statistical System that reviews and approves global statistical standards. Created by the United Nations Social and Economic Council, the UNSC assists the Council in promoting the development of national statistics and improving their comparability, coordinating the statistical work of specialized agencies, advising UN bodies on matters related to the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistical information, promoting the development of statistics and statistical methods in general.
