The National Statistical Institute (NSI) has initiated a project for georeferenced data on population for the years 2022 and 2023

Published at: 11.05.2023 - 11:40

In March 2023 NSI started working on the project “Improvement and reorganization of demographic statistics, migration statistics and population and housing census” according to the grant agreement with the European Commission № 101101360 - 2022-BG-POP-MIGR under the Single market programme, “European statistics”.

The main goal is the production of a population grid with a spatial resolution of 1 sq. km for the territory of Bulgaria for the reference years 2022 and 2023. The provision of georeferenced information for the years after the 2021 Census will enable more accurate tracking of the population dynamics at low territorial level.

The planned activities are aimed at building a sustainable production process of annual grid-based population statistics that will meet the requirements laid down in the new regulatory framework for European statistics on population (ESOP). The implementation of the project, will lay the foundations for expanding the availability of georeferenced data by providing information on the total number of the population and its basic demographic characteristics such as gender and age.

The duration of the project is 24 months. Total budget 70 317 euro.

More information on the pan-European Population grid, based on the data from the last two population censuses (2021 and 2011), can be found here: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Population_and_housing_census_2021_-_population_grids.
