Trifon Zarezan (Day of the Vinegrower) is a Bulgarian folk holiday in honour of St. Trifon. It is celebrated on February 1 or February 14 (old style) and marks the beginning of the spring cycle of agricultural work related to the cultivation of vineyards. The main ritual is pruning, which rejuvenates the plantation and ensures a healthy and fruitful harvest.
In the Bulgarian traditional labour calendar, the Day of Wine and Vine symbolises the awakening of nature and its preparation for a new life cycle. The holiday also has pre-Christian roots and has been celebrated since antiquity by winemakers and all those for whom wine is part of the good and sad occasions in human existence.
