Open lesson in statistics to students from 19 school "Elin Pelin"

On 25 November 2013 the students of XI and XII grade of 19 "Elin Pelin" Secondary School, "Technology entrepreneurship and business technological profile" visited the National Statistical Institute. The event was organized so that the young people can get acquainted with the practical side of statistics as a science and its wide application in all spheres of life. Mr. Bogdan Bogdanov, Ph.D., Head of Households, Income and Expenditure Statistics Department, Demographic and Social Statistics Directorate, had a lecture and multimedia presentation on "Sample statistical survey on income and living conditions of households in Bulgaria - Graphical and tabular presentation of information". The lesson was part of the "Marketing and Advertising" curriculum, "Statistics" section where not only collecting and processing is important, but also analyzing and proper presentation of statistical data.

The students were introduced to the sample surveys of statistics and the various types of surveys and estimations. With an interactive approach, Mr. Bogdan Bogdanov, Ph.D., presented methods for establishing a sample design with examples of sample design for socially important surveys carried out by the National Statistical Institute: "Household Budget Survey", "Labour Force Survey" and "Statistics on Income and Living Conditions". Special attention in the presentation was paid to the role and importance of socio-economic analysis as nature, techniques and characteristics.

The National Statistical Institute will continue the tradition to spread and cultivate statistical knowledge which is the essence of the statistical information produced. The aim is to answer a series of questions:

• How does the study of statistics influence the modeling and the stereotype of human thinking?

• How does the study of statistics influence the understanding of the surrounding world mentality and worldview?

• How does the study of statistics become a measure and a filter of the multiple and avalanche-like information flows?

• How does the study of statistics become the boundary that separates information from misinformation?

• How does the study of statistics become a model of broad general knowledge and a measure of the true values ​​in life?

• How does the study of statistics mold thinking, behaviour and lifestyle of the people?

The answers to these and other questions will affirm the activities of NSI, as a science and practice, closer to people. Along with that they will elevate and promote the positive image and status of the NSI as an institution with a nationwide, national and international significance.
