Within the project ESSnet on Big data II the National Statistical Institute in partnership with Mimirium Ltd. explored the possibility of building of a sustainable project for smart statistics and turning the city of Varna into a smart city. The article discusses the main stages of planning, building and implementation of the pilot project ‘Varna without restrictions’. The used technological solutions and approaches are described in detail, as well as the existing IoT infrastructure in the city of Varna and the possible ways for production of smart statistics. The results of the conducted empirical research for tracking the movement of people with disabilities in major public places in the city of Varna are presented. Based on the collected and analyzed results of this study, conclusions and recommendations were made regarding the potential of data from smart devices for the production of trusted smart statistics.

The main purpose of this study is to analyse the suitability of published information from official country statistics for assessing the level and dynamics of income inequality. At the same time, the author aims to acquaint the readers with basic methodological prerequisites for statistical assessment of income inequality and the conditions for comparability of the values of indicators that characterize it.
- Automated procedure for statistical analysis of the internal regularities in the time series - author Dr. Evgeni Ovchinnikov, Academy of Economics ‘D. A. Tsenov’ - Svishtov
The identification and the quantification of the internal regularities in the time series could be accomplished by applying the coefficient of auto determination. In the current paper I present an automated procedure for its estimation. The procedure is developed as a web application and it is tested on the grounds of time series for the economic development of Bulgaria for the period 2000 - 2018. I supply an evaluation of the strength and the structure of the regularities in the dynamics of selected indicators characterizing the economic conjuncture in the sectors industry, construction, retail and services.

This article provides an in-depth empirical analysis of the effects of innovation and technological progress on the labour market. The changing nature of work and job structure as a result of the spreading of innovation is being studied. The role of innovation management institutions is also examined. Emphasis is placed on protecting jobs by increasing investment in human capital; implementing policies for lifelong learning and strengthening social protection.

- Memoirs of a statistician. Attempt of a biographical ese - author Dr. Bogdan Bogdanov, Deputy President of the National Statistical Institute - Sofia
In the second part of his memoirs the author tells about an emblematic period of his professional career in state statistics - from 1991 to 2007. This is the period when the state statistics change the direction of its development, adapting to the conditions of the new democratic values and transition to a market economy.
This sequel can also be taken as an account of the past time, when reforms in accordance with and in line with the development of statistical surveys in the countries of the European Union began in the NSI. Thus, a correct comparability was gradually achieved between the data from the statistical surveys carried out by the Bulgarian statistics and the national statistics of the countries in the European Union.
The period under consideration covers the activity of the NSI, when chairmen of the institution are Prof. Zahari Karamfilov and Assoc. Prof. Alexander Hadjiiski. Conclusions are made about the work of state statistics and its development on the eve of Bulgaria's accession to the European Union in 2007.
The essay is dedicated to 140 years since the creation of Bulgarian state statistics.
- Prof. Dano Balevski - author Prof. Dimitar Radilov, University of Economics - Varna
Professor Dano Balevski was born on May 26, 1925 in the town of Ugarchin. He received his higher education at the Moscow Institute of Economics and Statistics with a degree in Statistics, graduating with honours. In 1952 he joined Directorate General of Statistics as head of department and since then has associated his life and professional career with the statistical institution. Prof. Balevski has been successively Vice-Chairman of CSO, Chairman of CSO, Chairman of the Committee on the Unified Social Information System, First Deputy Chairman of the Social Information Committee and again First Deputy Chairman of CSO until his retirement.
Prof. Balevski makes efforts for development and deepening of the statistical activity, expands the scope of the statistical researches, as well as of the publishing activity. Prof. Balevski takes an active part in international cooperation in the field of statistics. For nearly 40 years he lectured on foreign trade statistics and economic statistics at the Karl Marx Institute of Economics. The scientific research of Prof. D. Balevski is supplemented by a number of publications.
The name and activity of Prof. Dano Balevski leave a long lasting mark in the circles of Bulgarian statisticians. He died in Sofia on March 11, 1997.

- Population and housing census in Bulgaria in 1920 - author Sonya Zlatanova, National Statistical Institute - Sofia
On December 31, 1920, the seventh census of the population and housing stock in Bulgaria commences. It is carried out in all 2 391 administrative municipalities, consisting of 92 cities, 4 214 villages and 1 353 other settlements, or a total of 5 659 settlements. There are 20 953 agent enumerators, of which 5 151 in the cities and 15 802 in the villages. There are 3 500 - 602 agent controllers in the cities and 2,898 in the villages. On average, one enumerator has 231 enumerated persons - 188 in the cities and 246 in the villages. One agent-controller ran an average of 9 counting stations in urban municipalities and 5 in rural municipalities.
To promote the census and lift the spirits among the population of the Kingdom, a number of agitation activities are carried out. The General Directorate of Statistics issues special brochures ‘Appeal to teachers in the Kingdom’ in a circulation of 25,000. ‘Appeal to the Bulgarian citizens’ has a circulation of 300 000 copies. The brochure leaflet ‘Invitation to the Bulgarian citizens’ was distributed among the literate population in 300 000 copies in the period 25 - 31 December 1920. Large posters with a circulation of 50 000 are posted in prominent places on the streets of all towns and villages in the Kingdom.
The information on the enumerated persons is processed on five Powers machines and two sorting-counting machines. For each enumerated person, who is part of the available population, a punch card is being prepared, which measures 187x82 millimetres.
Unlike previous censuses, in which the main census form is the ID card, the census in 1920 is conducted with household cards.
The editions from the census of the population and the housing stock in 1920 were digitized and are with free access to the digital library of the NSI. The digital collection contains 3 876 pages of statistical information.
