In his speech, Mr Sergey Tsvetarsky emphasized the role of sustainable cooperation between countries in the development of official statistics. He stressed that statistics means comparison and thus standards, communication and cooperation are needed. He also added that Bulgaria has bilateral cooperation agreements with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus, Moldova, the countries in the Balkan region and that it has been organizing trainings of young statisticians from these countries in its Qualification Centre in Slivek for four consecutive years.
Later in the day, the heads of statistics in four countries - Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Lithuania and the Netherlands - gave lectures at a seminar for students at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics on the future of official statistics and statistical science. The President of the NSI, Mr Sergey Tsvetarsky, spoke about the role of the statistician in the Internet era when we are expecting the data revolution. Two years ago, in 2017 the amount of generated data was larger than in the previous 5 000 years, said Mr Tsvetarsky, adding that the amount of data doubles every three years. Challenges lie in Big Data, open data, experimental statistics and other opportunities for the development of statistics.
Possibilities for strengthening cooperation and joint future projects in the region were also discussed during the visit in Baku.
